The Attributes of God
Just a few Glimpses into Who Our God is
I
believe that God is a Spirit and does not have a physical body. Although He reveals Himself in human form on
occasion or refers to Himself anthropomorphically at times, He exists without
the binding of a material essence. I also
believe that God is a person because He has a mind, will, and emotions. The personhood of God is the essential basis
to the personhood of man because it is from His personhood which we have our
own personality – the image of God. I believe
that God is a living being. His life is
unique because He is self-sustaining and the source of all life. Without His breath, humanity would have no
life. I believe that God is
infinite. He has no beginning or end and
exists, as it were, outside of time and space.
I believe that God is immutable.
He continues without change in respect to His person or nature. God’s changeless character forms a basis for
His trustworthy character.
I
believe that God is pure. His primary
attribute seems to be portrayed as holiness throughout the Bible. God is separate from sin in a way no other
being in heaven or earth is. I also
believe that God is trustworthy. His
promises are without change and His covenants are sure and binding. He is always faithful to His words. I believe
that God is love; He does not need man to become a loving being, but
continually exhibited love amongst the three persons of the Godhead. Out of this love comes God’s grace and pardon
exhibited in the person and work of Jesus Christ.
I
believe that God is both immanent and transcendent at the same time. He is both wholly other, but transcends
Himself to fellowship with humanity.
o I reject deism because it does not
hold to the immanence of God.
o I reject pantheism because it does
not hold to the transcendence of God.
